Master of Arts Educational Technology

Michigan State University

My summer of 2013 courses were completed in the overseas program. I enjoyed spending time in Galway, Ireland at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This was a brand new experience for me and I am very thankful I was able to compete my first round of Master's classes in this environment. Given the free time in the rest of my schedule to really focus on my studies greatly increased my learning. I had a fantastic time exploring Ireland and getting to know my classmates.

Summer 2013

CEP 810: Teaching for Understanding with Technology

Teaching for understanding with technology is the first time we are introdcued to the TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy, Content and Knowledge) model of lerning. We were asked to take a lesson plan we had previously created and revise it to fit the 21st century learner. My lesson was on the speed of sound and I analyzed my lesson using TPCK. TPCK looks to find the "sweet spot" where all 4 aspects meet together. I was able to modify my lesson to incorporate technology using Smart Clickers.

CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technologies to Education

Adapting innovative technologies to education grouped us together with similar interests to form a SIG (Special Interest Group). My group was called SIGGL (Special Interest Group in Gamification and Learning). Our group explored all of the ways that educators incorporate gaming into their daily lessons and projects. We created a poster to display our findings and presented the poster to all the students in the overseas program.

CEP 812: Applying Educational Tech to Problems of Practice

Applying educational technology to problems of practice was an introduction to "Wicked Problems." Wicked problems are so big and messy that they most likely do not have a solution. This does not mean that they are impossible to solve they are just really really hard, thus wicked. We spent our time looking at the growth mindset in students and how we can get all of our students to find success in their failures. This concept has turned into a personal/professional mission for me and I am very passionate about using a growth mindset with my students. We used our research to provide a way to assess studenst using a growth mindset model.

Summer 2014

Summer of 2014 I was once again in the overseas program. I spent one more summer in Galway, Ireland at the National University of Ireland, Galway. We had most of our class come back for the second summer. The major task of all second year students in the overseas program is the conference that is put together for all MAET students and local educators from our host country.

CEP 800: Learning in School and Other Settings

In learning in school and other settings we were tasked with choosing a problem of practice and creating a solution to the problem. As stated most problems of practice are very large and sometimes seem impossible to solve. We were asked to "Dream It" and come up with the solution. For my problem of practice I chose reading comprehension with my 6th grade science students. The text books that we use are at an 8th grade reading level and my students are usually not even at a 6th grade reading level. My solution is a technology called Newsela that lowers the reading level of articles to match the students needs.

CEP 815: Technology & Leadership

Technology and leadership is where we created and ran a technology conference. GREAT (Global Resources in Education and Technology) 2014 was held at the National University of Ireland, Galway and was a great success. We made connections with educators and helped all overseas students with issues related to integrating technology in the classroom. Specifically I presented on implementing a 1:1 environment. We examined the pitfalls and solutions to make a successful program work. As a group we were able to arrange the "Youth Media Team" to be our keynote speakers.

CEP 822: Approaches to Ed Reasearch

In Approaches to Ed Research we focused on a particular misunderstanding to understand how understanding works and/or where it comes from. We explored ocean waves for our project. The common misconception is that ocean waves are created by the pull of the moon's gravity. We interviewed other students in the overseas program and several locals. The answers to our questions were very interesting. We had our subjects create a visual of their understanding on a a tablet. This really helped us to see where people can sometimes pick up these misunderstandings.

Fall 2015

CEP 818: Creativity in Teaching and Learning

Instructors: Dr. Punya MishraRohit Mehta

This course has been one of my favorites. It really pushed me to explore creativity and how that relates to my students. Several of the projects from this course will be used in my everyday teaching. This course has also challenged me to think about the details when creating lessons and making those lessons more engaging for my students.

CEP 820: Teaching Students Online

Instructors: Dr. Anne HeintzSandra Sawaya

Teaching students online design required students to create an online course using any OCM (online course managment system). I chose to use Schoology for my OCM and I was very pleased with the final result. I created an online course for my parents to learn how to use some of the Google applications that we are using in class. My hope is that my parents become actively involved in their students everyday work.

Spring 2015

CEP 817: Learning Tech through Design

Instructors: Dr. Danah HenriksenJon Good

In learning tech through design we examined a specific problem of practice that we were experiencing at school. We created solutions based on design best practices including ideation, brainstroming, and prototyping. My problem of practice specifically was the amount of quizzes and tests that we expect our 5th graders to complete. My design included an idea to test our students less, with fewer questions and cover additional standards.

CEP 807: Capstone Ed Technology

Instructor: Dr. Matt Koehler

The culmination of the MAET program. In this course we created an online portfolio to showcase all of our coursework in the program. This portfolio demonstrates the expectations and rigor of the MAET program. I have enjoyed experiencing everyone's portfolio and sharing my experiences in the program. Although this is the final project of the program I will use this portfolio to contine to explore and learn with educational technology.
