Abstract

My problem of practice is student reading comprehension of 6th grade science content. The transformation that I want to see in my students has two parts: increase understanding of supplemental science topics through targeted reading levels and implement strategies to break down complex text.  The technology I want to integrate is Newsela, this will be used to target the students reading level and allow current events articles to be used in class.  The next solution will be to implement strategies such as Talk to the Text and the Frayer Model to help students break down complex text.  This will be incorporated school-wide so students hear the same terminology throughout the day.  The transformation will be evaluated through teacher observations, formative assessment, growth data through STAR Reading, and rubrics specific to Talk to the Text.
