Transformation

The transformation I would like to see in my students is growth of grade equivalent reading level and improved strategies to break down complex text. With growth in these areas my students confidence to read a piece of text, whether that be from a textbook, article or other source and comprehend the meaning, interpret the text and apply the content will develop .  Too many times in class my students are disinterested in the content because they can’t comprehend the text.  Using Wiggins and McTighe’s Six Facets of Understanding as a guide, I think the two facets that are most important are application and interpretation.  With application students “design, develop, test, and revise solutions” (Wiggins, McTighe, 1998). I want students to be able to read and gather information and be able to apply it.  The interpretation facet is important because I want students to not just look for the “right answer” but read and comprehend the text and develop their own ideas.
